President Ersin Tatar made another notable statement regarding the informal dinner hosted by the UN Secretary-General, where he met with Greek leader Nikos Christodoulides.
President Tatar stated that during the dinner in New York, he raised the issue of the detention of businessman Simon Aykut, who was arrested by the Greek side for engaging in "illegal activities in the occupied territories" due to his investments in the north. For 20 years, Simon Aykut had been involved in real estate development in Northern Cyprus.
"Arresting Simon Aykut is wrong, inhumane, and unacceptable. You are holding a 74-year-old man in prison. There is no greater sin than this. You cannot make an arrest based on political reasons."
In this regard, Guterres expressed his displeasure and stated that an amnesty would be announced. Cypriot President Christodoulides, who initially said he could not interfere in the judicial system, remained silent in response to this statement.
